Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit-John 14:15-19
John 15:26-27
John 16:5-15
Key Verse: John 16:13-14 ( 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you).
1. Read verses Jn 14:15-16. (To whom is Jesus speaking? What were his disciples troubled about?) How can a disciple express love for Jesus? What does Jesus promise those who love and obey him? Who is the other Counselor? Who was the first Counselor? In what way is “another Counselor” better? (16b) How can he be there forever?
2. Read verse Jn 14:17. Why is it important that the Counselor speak the truth? Why can the world not accept him? Why can it neither see him or know him? How will disciples be different? Read Jn 14:18-19. What does Jesus promise? How will the disciples see Jesus? How does he give life?
3. Read verse Jn 14:26. Who is the Counselor and who sends him and what does he do? (What else does the Holy Spirit do? See Rom 8:26- 27; Jn 3:5-6). Read verse Jn 14:27. What does Jesus promise to give? How is Jesus’ peace different from that of the world?
4. Read verses Jn 15:26-27. How does Jesus help his disciples when they are hated by the world? How is the Holy Spirit described? What does he do? Why is it important that he is the Spirit of truth? What seems to be the place of truth in this post-modern culture
5 Read verses Jn 16:5-7. Where was Jesus going? Why was it to the disciples’ advantage that he go? Why could the Holy Spirit not come unless he left?
6 Read verse Jn 16:8-11. About what does the Holy Spirit convict the world? Think about sin, righteousness and judgment. What is the greatest sin? How does his going to the Father reveal righteousness? Why does the prince of this world stand condemned? (Jn 12:31;14:30)
7 Read verses Jn 16:12-15. Why must disciples continue learning and growing? What does the Holy Spirit teach? How does he bring glory to Jesus? How does dependance on the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit make disciples truly free?
