Compassion and Responsibility (Matthew 14:13-21)
“Jesus … had compassion on them…” (Mt 14:14).
“You give them something to eat” (Mt 14:16).
Study Questions: God’s Compassion and Your Responsibility. God‘s ultimate expression of compassion is the Cross of excruciating gore that precedes the exhilarating glory of the resurrection (2 Cor 5:21).
While doom scrolling, the title of the featured essay in the Guardian on 7/26/26 caught my attention: Why does everything feel so joyless? Welcome to the age of decadence without pleasure. It was a rather tedious and laborious read, as it gave many reasons why life is so joyless—distrations, optimisation, AI, the influence of the elite, etc—but ultimately it was grouping for an illusive answer, as though there was no clear answer why life felt so joyless. So I skimmed it and asked AI for a summary of the article! For St. Augustine had already answered the question crystal clearly 16 centuries ago! He wrote Confessions ~400 AD with his most memorable simple and succinct quote: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Thus, the answer as to why everything feels so joyless can be stated in one sentence: Many are joyless amid plenty because they are ignorant of God’s love and compassion for them. [The Guardian is left-leaning. It is widely recognized as a progressive and center-left publication.]
Outline:
- God’s Compassion (Mt 14:13-14).
- Your Responsibility (Mt 14:15-16).
- Eucharistic Echo (Mt 14:17-19).
- Divine Providence, Messianic Abundance (Mt 14:20-21).
Jesus feeds the five thousand in all four gospels: Mt 14:13–21, Mk 6:31–44, Lk 9:12–17, Jn 6:1–14.
Who Jesus is:
- Jesus is the God of compassion (Mt 14:14; Exo 33:19; Jer 31:3).
- Jesus gives you responsibility (Mt 14:16; Gen 1:28; 1 Pet 5:2).
- Jesus knows your limitations (Mt 14:17; 1 Tim 1:15; Rev 3:8).
- Jesus is the broken bread for the world (Mt 14:19; 26:26; Jn 6:35).
- Jesus is the God of abundant provision (Mt 14:20; Jn 10:10b).
Corresponding questions for you:
- Have you experienced Jesus’ love and compassion (Jer 31:3)? How?
- What responsibility has Jesus given you (Mt 28:19; Jn 14:15; 21:15-17; 1 Pet 5:2)? What obligation do you feel toward Christ (Rom 1:15)?
- How aware are you of your limitations, inadequacies and sins (1 Cor 15:10; Eph 3:9; 1 Tim 1:15; Rev 3:8)?
- Do you know how Jesus became broken bread for you (Mt 14:19; 26:26; Jn 6:35)? Are you broken bread and poured out wine for others (2 Tim 4:6)? **
- Have you received Jesus’ abundant provision (Jn 10:10b; 2 Tim 3:17)? Are you content and at peace with your life (Ps 23:1; Phil 4:11-13)?
** Crushing and Surrender:
- The Crushing Process: Grapes cannot become wine without being squeezed. So God cannot make us into wine if we object to the “fingers” He uses to crush us.
- Accepting Circumstances: We often want God to use His own direct, gentle methods, but He often uses difficult people we dislike or hard situations to break us.
- No Choosing the Cross: We must never try to pick the time, place, or manner of our own hardship or “martyrdom;” we must fully submit to God’s hands.
Serving and Spiritual Exhaustion:- The Source of Strength: Spiritual exhaustion comes from service, not sin. You must continuously replenish your own supply from God, because we are saved and sanctified so that God can exhaust us for His work.
